Description

A Clear Rock Crystal Snuff Bottle, School of the Rustic Crystal Master

1780-1880

Provenance: A Private Collection

Carved in low relief with wintry landscape scenes on each face, one side depicting figures seated on a promontory near huts under a leafless tree, the other with a pine tree near a rocky cliff, stopper

The depiction of wintry scenes is very much a characteristic of the school, whose scenes often evoke the wish of the high-minded individual to escape the drudgery of city life for one of introspection away from the never-ending woes of the ‘real’ world. For a further discussion of the school see Hughes, The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, pp. 162-163, no. 126.
